The Data Connect IG192HFP-DIN-K
Hyper Fast Poll with RF capabilities

The Data Connect IG192HFP-K and IG192HFP-DIN-K have the Optional feature “K” to allow the modem to work with RF link or radio for key-on commands.

IG96-DIN-pic2

The Data Connect hyper fast poll industrial grade leased line modem is the highest performance point-to-point and multi-point in the industry. It offers the fastest polling time of 17.4 ms (RTS-CTS delay) over voice-band leased line or private line circuits.

The multi-speed IG192HFP-K hyper fast poll modem is now offered in desktop, DIN rail mounting, or rack-mount configurations. The modem is ideal for multi-point communication applications including SCADA systems, RTUs, traffic monitor and control, and industrial automation networks. The IG192HFP-K supports RTUs with an EIA RS-232 and RS-485 serial port at speeds of 19200, 9600, 4800, 2400, and 0-1800 bps.

The IG192HFP-K hyper fast poll modem is designed to operate over 4-wire full duplex or 2-wire half unconditioned leased lines or private metallic circuits. For optimum performance, the modem employs QAM modulation, Viterbi coding scheme and FSK modulations to communicate over a variety of transmission lines.

Technical Notes

Connecting the IG192HFP-K Modems to the Alligator
Communications Model 1888 Radio over a Wireless Channel

The Data Connect hyper fast-poll modem model IG192HFP-K is designed to interface with the Alligator Communications model 1888 radio over a full duplex wireless channel at data speeds of 1200, 2400, 4800 and 9600 bps. The re-designed version of the IG192HFP-K will interface with the RTUs and communicate with the master modem in the following modes:

  • DTE/RTU utilizes RS-232 interface with the modem and use RTS and CTS as flow control
  • DTE/RTU utilizes RS-232 interface with the modem and only provide a 3-wire interface (TD, RD, Signal ground)
  • DTE/RTU utilizes RS-485 interface with the modem, using TD+, TD-, RD+, RD- as the only signal.
  • DIP switch to enable or disable the “Push-To-Talk” feature of the modem.

Making the Connections

The IG192HFP-K modem was modified to provide an additional key-on signal (Push-To-Talk) to connect to the Alligator Communications model 1888 radio (radio). The RTU, the modem and the radio are connected with special cables to provide the key-on signal and ground return. The system connections are shown in Fig 1 and Fig 2. The modem will support RTU/DTE with either RS-232 or RS-485 interface.

  • Following the connections as shown in Fig 1-A for RS-232 interface
  • Following the connections as shown in Fig 1-B for RS-485 interface

When DIP switch SW1-6 is ON, the modem will activate its Push-To-Talk feature. The main theory of operation of this feature is for the modem to turn on the radio as soon as RTS is asserted by the RTU to the IG192HFP-K modem. The modem will use the delayed Clear-To-Send (CTS) as the indicator to the RTU to signal the start of sending data to the host end. When the modem turns on the radio by way of a TTL logic low signal (Key-on), the modem will wait for 30 msec before start sending any analog signal to the radio and the master modem end. This timing is critical and is required by the radio and the modem to ensure the training pattern of the modem is fully transmitted without distortion. For RTUs that only provide the 3-wire RS-232 interface, or using the RS-485 interface, the modem will not receive the RTS signal for the key-on function. As such, the modem must be configured to enable the “Auto-RTS” option (SW1-5 to ON). With this option, the modem will generate its internal RTS when data is detected from the RTU and turn on the “Push-To-Talk” signal to the radio.
